Crewdson, Hocks, Wall, and Sherman

Gregory Crewdson
I really enjoy the way Crewdson takes realistic settings and adds a surreal twist. It is also very interesting the way he combines photography with film techniques. I am most drawn to the car stopped at a yellow light. It draws me in and makes me question what is really going on in the image.

Teun Hocks
Hock's works seem like something straight out of a dream. I really enjoy the combination of prints and painting. It also makes the artwork more personal and interesting because Hocks portrays himself as the main character in his images. My favorite part of his art is the humorous and youthful persona of the character.

Jeff Wall
It's very interesting that each of Wall's works could have multiple stories behind them. I like that Jeff said he became and artist as a way of telling his stories without writing them down. The sense of movement in his work, especially in the image above ("Milk") really grasps my attention.

Cindy Sherman
I love that Sherman herself plays all the different roles in her artwork. It amazes me how drastically she can change her look from picture to picture. Just by viewing her images you get a sense that you know each of the characters personally. Also even though the background is not the focus of the artwork, it often has a lot to add to the overall feeling and mood of each work.

My Inspiration

I grew up in a family full of extremely creative and artistic people who are very inspirational to me. I am also inspired by nature and all of my surroundings.
Recently I have been focusing a lot in fashion because it was my major before transferring to Philadelphia University and Betsey Johnson is definitely a huge inspiration to my fashion sketches.
I also really enjoy and am inspired by Pop Art especially that of Andy Warhol and John Stango. I love the bold bright colors and the fun, colorful feel of their work.
